BLE Concussion Monitor App
Concussions can result in a variety of health issues, including cognitive and behavioral problems, as well as Second Impact Syndrome, which can cause death. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that over half of all sports related concussions go undetected, leaving those athletes at a much greater risk of permanent neurological damage.
Prevent Biometrics, a Minneapolis based company, is aiming to help coaches and trainers identify those athletes who may have sustained a concussion, and help reduce the chance of concussions going untreated. Their goal is to develop an accurate and reliable smart mouthguard for detecting concussion causing impacts in real time. They are achieving this through development of a head impact monitor (smart mouthguard). The head impact monitor uses patented algorithms and proprietary technology to calculate critical information about each head impact and relay it to the mobile app.
We worked on
DESIGN + DEVELOPMENT Our team worked to design and develop the mobile app that displays data and alerts generated by the mouthguard. It alerts coaches, trainers, and parents when an athlete receives a high level impact, recommending they perform a sideline concussion assessment. To aid in the assessment process, the app also steps users through the CDC’s checklist of the signs and symptoms of a concussion. The mobile app also provides athletes with a lifetime history of their head impacts, including both high and low level impacts.
